What is scrub typhus, the mystery fever being reported in Uttar Pradesh and Assam?

Several districts of Uttar Pradesh and Assam have reported cases of scrub typhus, a mystery fever. Scrub typhus is a disease caused by bacteria called Orientia tsutsugamushi. It spreads to people through bites of infected chiggers (larval mites). Its symptoms usually begin within 10 days of being bitten. These include fever and chills, headache, body aches, rashes and muscle pain.
